Minx line canceled09.25.08

It’s all over the Internet at this point, but The Beat links to a CBR report that DC is canceling the Minx books. No one is really too surprised and most people seem to be conflicted but sad about it. I know I am.

Dirk Deppey has an interesting analysis, and one I mostly agree with — DC wasn’t thinking long term. The Minx line is less than two years old and despite that deal with Alloy, was never really marketed to its target audience. I think it was just beginning to find its footing and its direction, but because it was underperforming, DC just scraps the whole thing.

I understand DC is a business and while I admire them for trying to get teenage girls as an audience, they obviously had no clue what they were doing. The books, for the most part, were good and not great and didn’t really appeal to the teenage girls reading Twilight or watching Gossip Girls.

In the end, it was a nice attempt but it was one that was pretty much created to fail.

Isotope Award now accepting submissions09.10.08

Yes, I know I’ve said how much I love Isotope before and I am still sad it’s way across the country. But the Isotope Award is cool regardless of all of that. It has a cool collection of knowledgeable judges and is, without a doubt, an honor. If you have a mini-comic, what are you waiting for?

(Unless there is some sort of miracle, I doubt very seriously I will make it to Alternative Press Expo this year. I’ve even considered the “well, I could fly out there for a day …” scenario, but the money it would cost me is fairly ridiculous. Maybe next year …)

Satrapi on CBS Sunday Morning04.21.08

No video link, but Marjane Satrapi discussed Persepolis with Serena Altschul on CBS Sunday Morning. It was a good little interview and it was fun to see. (My mom mentioned she wanted to see the movie and I said I kept meaning to loan her the book.)

I haven’t read any of the news from the New York Comic Con yet. I will probably do that tomorrow. The major reports from friends seems to be that it was crowded. If life doesn’t get away from everyone, I may have some better first-hand reports to share.

With any luck, I’ll make it to the MoCCA Art Festival and Big Apple Con in June.

Persepolis up for Best Animated Feature01.22.08

After being passed over for consideration in the Foreign Language category, a lot of us didn’t have much hope for Persepolis‘ Oscar chances. I am delighted with its nomination in the Animated Feature category — it’s where it belongs and gives me hope that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences may realize that animation can do more than just be for kids (although that’s been pretty slow going).

I know it will lose to Ratatouille, though.

More thoughts on Persepolis — both the book and the movie — are coming (the movie finally opens here this weekend).

Del Ray/Marvel shōjo X-Men manga12.09.07

I like it.

Honestly, I kind of stopped reading after “The manga is scripted by Raina Telgemeier and Dave Roman …” because that’s all I need to know. I’m trying to figure out why Anzu seems familiar to me, but nothing in a quick Google search is really sticking out at me.

(Seriously, though, an X-Men manga focused on Kitty Pryde written by Telgemeier and Roman? Are they studying my brain while I sleep or something?)
